The Minister of Social Affairs appointed a Family Council at the beginning of 1998 in accordance with a motion by the Althingi on the formation of an official family policy and measures to strengthen the position of the family.
The roles of the Family Council include:
a) acting as an advisor to the government on matters concerning the family;
b) making proposals on programmes of action concerning the family;
c) instigating public discussion on family issues and giving guidance and information to families concerning responses to new and changing circumstances;
d) to encourage practical measures in support of the family in society, and
e) to support studies of the standing and position of the Icelandic family.
